NORTHERN TERRITORY EMPLOYERS RECOGNISED FOR OUTSTANDING SUPPORT TO DEFENCE RESERVISTS
The Northern Territory and the Kimberley (NT/K) was the first region to host their annual Defence Reserves Employer Support Awards for 2019.
The event, hosted by the NT/K Defence Reserves Support Council (DRSC), generated the largest number of award nominations experienced for the region.
Acting NT/K DRSC Chair, Ms Camille Fong Lim said it was outstanding to see so many employers supporting their Reservists.
“The support of these employers is vital to the Reservists’ ability to fulfil their reserve duties, especially given the distance some of them have to travel to participate in the Australian Defence Force Reserve,” Ms Fong Lim said.
Acting Head of Reserve and Youth Division, Brigadier Duncan Hayward CSC said the awards allowed Defence to acknowledge employers who had been particularly supportive of their Reservist employees when undertaking Reserve service.
“It is a huge testament to these businesses to be acknowledged by their staff as an employer of choice,” Brigadier Hayward said.
Manunda Terrace Primary School in Darwin was named winner of the Employer Support Award for the Public Sector category, after being nominated by Royal Australian Navy Reservist Chief Petty Officer and Teacher in Charge of the preschool, Ron Schauer.
Principal of Manunda Terrace Primary School, Lisa Hirschausen said being able to support Ron as a Reservist was very important to the school community.
“Ron is an excellent classroom practitioner who consistently supports the students and school community,” Ms Hirschausen said.
“We make the effort to support Ron’s Reserve leave, as we see the benefits of the skills that he is able to share through both positions.”
The National Employer Support Awards will be held at the Australian War Memorial on 18 June 2019. Finalists for the national event are selected from Employer Support Award Winners from each State and Territory.
