Employers from Western Australia recognised for support to Defence reservists
Employers from across Western Australia were commended for their support of Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reservists at the annual Employer Support Awards event held at Fremantle Sailing Club on 14 November 2018.
The event, hosted by the Western Australia Defence Reserves Support Council, recognises employers who have supported their ADF Reservist employees.
Head Reserve and Youth Division, Rear Admiral Bruce Kafer, said employers acknowledged last night had all been nominated by their Reservist employees.
“The recognition of these businesses and organisations by their staff members as an employer of choice is testament to the contribution they make to the ADF,” Rear Admiral Kafer said.
BHP employees Army Corporal Michael Toy and Navy Lieutenant Mick Wheeler were among those who nominated their employers to receive an award.
Corporal Toy is Maintenance Services Superintendent with BHP’s Nickel West operation at Kalgoorlie and in his military life, a section commander with the Army’s Royal Western Australia Regiment.
Lieutenant Wheeler is Head of Employee Relations Australia and Asia with BHP and is a public affairs officer in the Navy.
BHP Rail General Manager Michael Bailey said the company, which won the Employer Support Award in the Western Australia large private business category, appreciated the acknowledgment of its support, commitment and flexibility that enabled Corporal Toy, Lieutenant Wheeler and other BHP staff to undertake a variety of Reserve commitments.
“BHP understands how important our support is to the contribution our people in the Navy, Army and Air Force make to Australia’s Defence capability and recognises the leadership and other core skills they bring back to our company,” Mr Bailey said.
The awards ceremony also provided an opportunity for employers to learn more about the programs offered by Defence Reserves Support, gain a better understanding of the many roles Reservists fill in the ADF, and learn how their military skills are transferable to their civilian workplaces.
