Employers from Victoria recognised for support to Defence reservists

Employers from across Victoria have been recognised for their support of Australian Defence Force (ADF) reservists, at the Defence Reserves Support Council’s annual Employer Support Awards event in Melbourne, on 17 October 2018.

The event, hosted by the Victorian Defence Reserves Support Council (DRSC VIC), recognised employers who have actively supported their Australian Defence Force Reservist employees, within their civilian and military workplaces.

State Chair DRSC VIC, Ms Jaquie Scammell, said the event highlighted the strong support so many employers across Victoria are giving to Australian Defence Force reservists.

“Without the support of their employers, reservists would be unable to fulfil their vital reserve duties,” Ms Scammell said.

Head Reserve and Youth Division, Rear Admiral Bruce Kafer, said the employers acknowledged last night were all nominated by their employees.

“The recognition of these business by their staff members as an employer of choice is testament to the important contribution that these businesses make to the ADF,” Rear Admiral Kafer said.

Lieutenant Commander Pelagia (Pela) Markogiannakis has worked at The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust since July 2015 and nominated her employer for their support, commitment and flexibility.

This has allowed Pela to undertake a variety of reserve commitments in her role as Staff Officer Reserves and Staff Officer Infrastructure over the last three years.  This included arranging and hosting Navy activities showcasing reservist skills to employers and, reviewing and assessing Navy Infrastructure across the country.

The awards ceremony provided an opportunity for employers to learn more about the programs offered by Defence Reserves Support, to gain a better understanding of the many roles reservists fill in the ADF, and to learn how their military skills are transferable to their civilian workplaces.
