Edinburgh Reservist steps up to the challenge during COVID-19

By FLTLT Nick O'Connor

RAAF Base Edinburgh Security Force Reservist Aircraftswoman Pip Ashby has rolled up her sleeves to support base security efforts during the current COVID-19 Pandemic.

ACW Ashby said the COVID-19 situation had prompted her unit to galvanise as a team with the 27 year old stepping up to the mark by taking on weekend security shifts.

"I have been undertaking security shifts on some weekends to assist with the requirement of 24/7 security at RAAF Base Edinburgh," she said.

"I have found it rewarding to be able to assist during this time of increased need."

When not in her Air Force Uniform, Pip works as a Legal Receptionist for a Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Law Firm in the Adelaide CBD.

Her employer's flexible working arrangements have allowed Pip to meet the increased demands for Air Force Reserve attendance.

"I’ve worked at the firm for just over four years. My job role includes answering the phones, greeting and tending to clients, attending court to lodge documents, maintaining office supplies, administration support, and general office up-keep," Pip said.

"My employer has been very flexible in regards to time off required to undertake training and to attend exercises and courses. They have allowed me to take approximately nine months of leave, accumulating over my three years in the RAAF.

"Like many aspects of life it is all about trying to keep a balance.  As such I have been doing Reserve work on the weekend, so as to minimise the impact on my civilian employer.

“In the lead up to the Pandemic, they were receptive to me potentially needing time off so I could render more assistance on base.”

Defence Reservists are from all professions and trades within the community. They’re highly motivated people who take on training and service with enthusiasm and commitment. Reservists have skills that can be transferred directly to their civilian organisation such as leadership, teamwork, problem solving and communication.
