ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Awards – call for Award presenters
The ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Awards (YLT Awards) recognise the outstanding leadership qualities of school students throughout Australia. Last year more than 4000 awards were presented to high school students in years 10 and 12.
Rear Admiral Bruce Kafer, Head Reserve and Youth Division, is calling upon personnel from across the ADF to support this program by volunteering to present awards.
RADM Kafer said the awards recognise and celebrate students who demonstrate outstanding qualities in areas such as leadership, teamwork, integrity, reliability, service to school and our community.
“These admirable qualities mirror those displayed by veterans from the Battle of Long Tan. The battle was fought during the Vietnam War, a conflict in which all three Services played a role,” he said.
The awards comprise a monetary component and a certificate which is presented at a school ceremony.
Since the program’s commencement in 2006, a key component has been the attendance of an ADF member at each school ceremony to present the YLT Awards.
Presenters can be either full-time or part-time ADF members and are sought from all ranks. The presence of a military member at school ceremonies reaffirms the purpose and intent of the award, while enhancing the awareness of the ADF.
“Having a military member present the awards enriches the sense of pride and prestige associated with being a recipient,” RADM Kafer said.
“Last year there was a decrease in the military representation at school ceremonies and we need the support of our ADF members to help turn this around.”
“By volunteering to attend a school ceremony, not only are you playing a key role in creating awareness of the ADF, but you are also enhancing young leaders’ perceptions of the ADF.”
“I ask ADF members to visit www.adflongtanawards.gov.au today and register to become a volunteer military presenter.”
