Introduction

Nominated by reservist employees, the Employer Support Awards (ESA) are designed to formally recognise those employers who have demonstrated their commitment to supporting reservists in their workplace. While the awards program does not provide any financial or commercial gain to employers, it does offer the chance to give employers the formal public recognition they deserve.

Please preview the form to make sure you have everything you need. For example, a good quality copy of your organisations logo and your organisations ABN.

Tips and hints

Annually, hundreds of nominations are received from reservists sharing their stories of support they’ve received from their civilian employer. When writing your nomination, highlight the special efforts from your organisation in order for you to undertake your Reserve service. The Selection Panel love reading about those outside the box examples, particularly when it’s had a big impact on you!

Important information

This form will be reviewed and assessed against other employers in the same category, by a selection board of senior and executive members of Defence, to determine the winner at both a State/Territory and national level. When submitting your nomination, you should provide relevant information, and examples of how your employer has supported you throughout the submission period.

All nominations are subject to Defence Reserve service (Protection) Act 2001 checks prior to progressing to the selection board. Should your nomination result in a category win at your State/Territory Employer Support Awards, your nomination will then be considered within the national pool of nominations for the National Employer Support Awards.

It is perfectly acceptable to seek assistance from your chain of command or employer when completing the nomination, to expand and enhance it in ways that will strengthen and differentiate it from other supportive employer nominations.

Please note, the Selection Panel scoring your nomination is not solely comprised of Defence members. Please limit acronyms where possible. You might consider asking your employer, colleagues or unit chain of command to assist in reviewing and strengthening the example(s) you submit.

For example, have changes to rosters or staffing been required? Has your Reserve service affected productivity, workloads, sales or profit? Has your employer demonstrated outside the box support to your Reserve service?

In the latest calendar year, how or to what extent have you been able to apply your training/skills/experience from your Reserve service to enhance your effectiveness with your civilian employer?
