SA Sea Ride : Jun 2017
HMAS Leeuwin Sea Ride
The Captain and crew of HMAS Leeuwin recently hosted Defence Reserves Support South Australia (DRS SA) and guests from Normetals, Australian Institute of Company Directors, Boral Resources SA, Swordfish Computing, Ultra-Avalon and the Make a Wish Foundation.
HMAS Leeuwin has been working along the South Australian coast conducting hydrographic surveys and provided DRS SA with an opportunity to host six supportive employers on board for a tour of the ship.
Make a Wish child, Daniel Blackman, his parents Cheryl and Steve and a Make a Wish Foundation representative Shannon Cook joined the employers on board as part of Daniel’s ‘wish.’
Guests were shown through the ship, experiencing the main galley, the junior sailors mess and the bridge where Daniel got to sit in the Captain’s seat. A brief history of surveying was provided, along with details of the current techniques and equipment used to survey and analyse the data.
While most of the guests ate with the junior sailors, Daniel dined with the Officers in the Ward Room followed by a game of ‘Akers’ and a meeting with the Captain, LCDR Richard Mortimer.
A ‘Man Overboard’ drill was conducted with the crew rescuing ‘Oscar’ from St Vincent’s Gulf. The crew also simulated a fire drill and briefed the guests who also had an opportunity to handle the weapons.
In an honourable gesture, Leading Seaman Mitchell Timmins presented his Australian Defence Force Bronze Commendation to Daniel in recognition of his brave battle with illness.
The final highlight of the day was being hoisted over the side of the ship, dressed in life vests and helmets, in a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to be taken back to shore, disembarking at Glenelg.
Thank you to Boral Resources South Australia who signed up to the DRS Supportive Employer Program just prior to the sea ride.
HMAS Leeuwin’s crew are a credit to the Australian Navy with their professional conduct and the compassion shown during this activity.
