Employer Support Awards: NSW, NT&K Region 2018

Employers recognised for their support to Defence Reservists

Employers from across New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Kimberley region have been recognised for their support of Australian Defence Force Reservists at the Defence Reserves Support Council’s recent annual Employer Support Awards.

The events recognised employers who have actively supported their Australian Defence Force Reservist employees, within their civilian and military workplaces.

Acting State Chair DRSC NSW, Mr James Digges, said the NSW event held in early April highlighted the strong support many employers across the State were giving to Australian Defence Force Reservists.

“Without the support of their employers these Reservists and many others across the Defence Force would be unable to fulfil their Reserve duty, that is vital to the success of the Australian Defence Force,” Mr Digges said.

The NSW winners by category were:

  • Leichardt Park Aquatic Centre – Not For Profit Sector
  • Sydney Trains/NSW Trainlink – Public Sector
  • Westpac Bank – Private Sector Large Business
  • University of Notre Dame and Charles Sturt University – Supportive Education Sector

The NT and Kimberley Employer Support Awards were held in late March.

Defence Reserves Support NT and Kimberley Acting Territory Manager, Ms Chris Cates, said the ceremony provided an opportunity to publicly recognise businesses and public sector organisations who had gone ‘above and beyond’ to support ADF Reservists.

“The activity aims to acknowledge the contributions made by employers of Reservists and publicly recognise employers in the Northern Territory and Kimberley region,” Ms Cates said.

“Awards were given across the Public, Private and Not-For-Profit Sectors. This year all entries came from NORFORCE, an integrated unit comprised of both full-time and Reserve soldiers.”

NT and Kimberley winners were:

  • BWS (Broome) – Private Sector
  • Alice Springs Town Council – Public Sector (Runner up - Department of Education Barkly Region)
  • Northern Land Council – Not-For-Profit

Head Reserve and Youth Division, Rear Admiral Bruce Kafer, said the employers acknowledged at the awards ceremony were all nominated by their employees.

“It is a huge testament to these businesses and public sector organisations to be acknowledged by their staff members as an employer of choice,” Rear Admiral Kafer said.

Both awards ceremonies provided an opportunity for employers to learn more about the programs offered by Defence Reserves Support, to gain a better understanding of the many roles Reservists undertake in the Australian Defence Force, and to learn how their Reservists’ military skills are transferable to their civilian workplaces.
