DRSC: Spring Meeting 2017

Defence Reserves Support Council National Spring Meeting

The Defence Reserves Support Council (DRSC) held their spring council meeting and dinner in Canberra over 9-10 November. The meeting was chaired by the DRSC National Chair, Ms Jane McAloon and was well attended by council members from all States and Territories, representatives from Navy, Army and Air Force, as well as members from several industry groups.

The spring meeting of council members concentrated on the refocusing of efforts to more targeted employer engagement, highlighting the need for quality data identifying the civilian employers of Reservists.

The DRSC reviewed data form the Defence Census 2015 and from the YourSay Reserves survey. The 2015 Defence Census indicated that 81% of Reservists have some form of civilian employment. Rear Admiral Bruce Kafer, Head Reserve and Employer Youth Division made a commitment to the DRSC, to work with each of the three Services to assist in obtaining the details of specific employers of Reservists, allowing the DRSC to directly target the most influential employers.

Ms McAloon also welcomed several new representatives to the council, including Kate Louis from Australian Industry Group, Jenny Lambert from Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Julie Morris from the Australian Council of Women. The input from all new participants was greatly appreciated as the Council moves forward with its more targeted approach to employer engagement.

Colonel Bede Fahey and Mr Bridgette van den Broek from the New Zealand Defence Force also joined the DRSC for the meeting and dinner to share lessons learnt from their support of civilian employers of their Reservists.
